LA VIRGEN DE LAS CARISHINAS
Social representations deposit a concrete discourse related to the general symbolism of the society on women’s’ bodies and their feminine roles. In this manner, one can affirm that femininity is one of the dogmas that a society uses to speak of its phantasms.
VIRGENS UNTIL NEXT NOTICEis a series of paintings which attempts to revert the negative meaning of adjectives and common expressions used in Ecuador to devalue women in a misogynist context.
This series proposes to defend damaged femininity & apport evidence to the fact that we live in a paradoxical society. Even though a profound respect for our mothers and the Virgen Mary, this is a ‘macho’ society marked by alarming numbers in so far as discrimination and violence to our gender are concerned.
“La Virgen de las Carishinas”, ‘The Virgen of the Carishinas’. Carishina is a Kichwa Word. Cari means man, while shina means similar to …. The term refers to woman who is not efficient at cooking, taking care of her home or doing domestic tasks; it is used to criticize a woman who prefers “manly” activities.
