LA VIRGEN DE LAS QUE ESTAN EN SUS DIAS DIFICILES
Social representations deposit a concrete discourse related to the general symbolism of the society on women’s’ bodies and their feminine roles. In this manner, one can affirm that femininity is one of the dogmas that a society uses to speak of its phantasms.
VIRGENS UNTIL NEXT NOTICE is a series of paintings which attempts to revert the negative meaning of adjectives and common expressions used in Ecuador to devalue women in a misogynist context.
This series proposes to defend damaged femininity & apport evidence to the fact that we live in a paradoxical society. Even though a profound respect for our mothers and the Virgen Mary, this is a ‘macho’ society marked by alarming numbers in so far as discrimination and violence to our gender are concerned.
“La Virgen de las que Están en sus Días Dificiles”, ‘Holy Mother of the Ones Who Are in Their Difficult Days.’ A term used for a woman who is having her period, used also to accuse a woman of being aggressive or in a bad mood, whether she is menstruating or not.
